ASANO Takeji Gallery

"B. 1900 in Kyoto. Grad. Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1919 and Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1923. Studied Japanese-style painting with Tsuchida Bakusen. Active in the formation of Kyoto Sosaku-Hangakai in 1929. In 1930 participated with Tokuriki Tomikichiro and Asada Benji in creating the series Creative Prints of Twelve Months in New Kyoto (Sosaku-hanga shin Kyoto junikagetsu) published by Uchida. Also contributed to other series of landscapes in 1930s. Created the self-carved, self-printed series Noted Views in the Kyoto-Osaka Area (Kinki meisho fukei) in 1947. Contributed to Taishu hanga. Associate member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai 1955-1960. Excelled as a carver. Sometimes signed his landscape prints with the kanji "Takeji to" (Takeji carved). His late prints from the 1970s and 1980s are simple, seemingly naive, humorous, and signed T.A. preceded by an apostrophe and the year." --'Guide to Modern Japanese Prints: 1900-1975' by H.
