Toyohara KUNICHIKA Gallery

Kunichika represents one of the last artists of the Ukiyoe tradition. Born in Edo, now called Tokyo, he was a pupil of both Toyohara Chikanobu and later Utagawa Kunisada. He primarily produced prints of historical subjects, actors, and landscapes. His prints are represented in the collections of the British Musem, DeYoung Museum of San Francisco, Tokyo National Museum, and Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Kunichika Toyohara KUNICHIKA (1835-1900). "Hosokawa Katsumoto" (15th C. [1430-1473] warlord), oban tate-e (14" x 9"). Signed "Toyohara Kunichika hitsu" with Toshidama seal and dated "Meiji 5" (1872). Condition: Very good; very slightly toned; several small foxing spots in upper margin; no tears or folds; good color; "gauffrage" (embossing) of inner robe; full margins. $300. (#99AM)

Condition: Fair to good; right and bottom margins trimmed; slight wrinkling throughout; very slight abrasion upper right corner; very stong colors; no tears, stains or foxing. $225. (#99AK)

Condition: Very good; left margin slightly trimmed; two tiny worm holes below signature; outstanding carving of individual hairs; very stong colors; no tears, stains or foxing; Meiji backing. $325. Condition: very good; brown spot in right margin and very faint brown spot on elbow; very light metallic transfer stain next to her head; margins intact; mica residue in green background; excellent color; "gauffrage" (embossing) of background design in UL panel; very fine carving of hair. $300.
