Many artists from around the world sent examples of their work to be exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition held in 1892 and 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. George Barrie Co. published a series of etchings and lithographs based on the submitted works; this etching executed by Xavier Le Sueur was copied from the painting of a similar size by the Munich artist Edmund Harburger, known for his humorous genre scenes. "At the spring" is an appreciative rendering of the "summum bonum", the sense of well being at the fountain head and true source of all comfort which pervades this philosopher of the cellar.
