Maurice Compris was born in Amsterdam, Holland, but emigrated to the United States at an early age. He studied with Drake and Alebee and eventually settled in Rockport, Massachusetts. He was a member of both the North Shore and Rockport Artist Associations and won a prize with an exhibition at the latter in 1931. One of his murals can be seen at the Massachusetts State Infirmary in Tewksbury. This beautifully executed portrait of a grand matron is signed and dated ("30") in the upper left corner.
