Kunichika represents one of the last artists of the Ukiyoe tradition. Born in Edo, now called Tokyo, he was a pupil of both Toyohara Chikanobu and later Utagawa Kunisada. He primarily produced prints of historical subjects, actors, and landscapes. His prints are represented in the collections of the British Musem, DeYoung Museum of San Francisco, Tokyo National Museum, and Honolulu Academy of Arts.
